On Wednesday, June 18, President Obama hosted the first-ever Makers Faire at the White House. To celebrate this #NationOfMakers, AlphaLab Gear, the hardware and robotics accelerator program of Innovation Works, hosted a social media Day of Makers event. Some of the top social media folks in Pittsburgh were invited…and the ScareHouse Podcast was one of them. Hear as we sit down with a few of the companies who just completed the AlphaLab Gear program on the awesome things being made in Pittsburgh.

Scott and Margee talk to the folks from LifeShel who have built a cell phone case and app to crowdsource safety and work towards preventing sexual violence. LifeShel is partnering with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape to ensure the user is at the forefront of design. No hyperbole-this product will save lives.

Next we talk to Matthew Stanton Co-Founder of SolePower. SolePower insoles allow you to charge a battery pack with the power of your footsteps! Hikers, soldiers, and honestly all of us have found ourselves without an outlet and in great need of power, and now we’ll have it right at our feet!

We then encountered a pleasant surprise with our next talk with Digital Dream Labs where we ran into former ScareHouse Actor talented art director Aaron Clark. Digital Dream Labs develops games to teach children how to program and have fun at the same time. Be sure you check out their super fun games!

Finally we check in with Frank from Thread. You may remember Frank from our first Car Podcast with Laura Kelly last year, short story—Frank is awesome. Thread turns plastic into fabric (Frank tells us how this happens) and they are dedicated to not only providing raw materials that are ethically sourced but bringing jobs and training to people in Haiti.
