Annabelle is a prequel (possibly one of many to come) to The Conjuring (2013). The doll that intrigued audiences a little over a year ago despite it being confined to a mostly peripheral role in the original takes center stage in Annabelle which focuses on its backstory. In many ways Annabelle is scarier than the original due to the freedom that comes from not basing the film on actual experiences. Whereas the scares in The Conjuring were heavily influenced by case records and thus not very graphic the ones in Annabelle are visually rich very much in the mode of Insidious (2010).
